Outdoor Plumbing Tips to Get You Started For Spring

Outdoor Plumbing

With the arrival of spring in the Woodlands, TX, it is time to open the windows and let the breeze and the sunshine in. It’s the perfect time to get started on those home maintenance tasks that you put off over the winter.

In addition to spring cleaning jobs, like washing the windows, doing a full dusting and cleaning the carpets, you should put outdoor plumbing maintenance on your list. Your outdoor plumbing is exposed to the elements, which makes it more vulnerable and prone to leaks. Take some time to inspect for leaks and repair where needed. Here is how to get started.

Sprinkler Check

SprinklerIf your sprinkler has sprung a leak over the winter, now is the time to find out. Look around your lawn. Do you see any puddles or bubbling water? How about dead or sunken patches? These are signs of leaks.

Open the valve boxes to look for water. Inside they should be dry, so if you have a leak, there may be water. Rodents like to make homes in those boxes, so that could be the reason why.

Check sprinkler heads for damage and replace them as needed. Clean dirt and stones out of the way. Ensure that the timers are set for the right day and time.

Hose Repair

Outdoor HosesYou’d be surprised at how much water can leak out of a small tear in your garden hose.

Make sure that your hoses are in good shape before you put them into circulation this spring.

If you find any tears, patch them up. If there are multiple tears, you may want to replace the hose altogether.

Protect your hoses from damage by storing them properly. Hang them on a hook against a wall.

Clean and Check the Gutters

Home GuttersYour gutters need to be cleared of leaves so that springtime rain can drain properly off your roof.

If leaves and other matter are blocking the path to the downspout, the water will run down the house and cause leaks in your foundation and/ or basement. This can cause mold growth.

Climb up on your ladder and remove the leaves. While you are up there, check the gutters for signs of leaks or other damage.

Check the Faucets

Outdoor FaucetFinding out if you have a leak in your outdoor faucet is pretty easy. Turn the faucet on and off. Do you see water lingering where it shouldn’t?

It’s possible that you have a leak in your supply line. To test for this, place your fingers on the spigot and turn the water on to full. If the water knocks your fingers away, you don’t have a leak.

If the pressure is weak and you can hold the water in, then you’ve got a leak. Don’t put off your spring plumbing maintenance. The sooner you get it done, the sooner you can relax and enjoy your lawn and garden for the season.
