What’s the Best Water Filtration System for a Modern Home?

Deciding on a water filtration system for the home is easier said than done. There are many different factors to consider, not the least of which is the size of the home, the quality of water in the home, and whether anyone is especially sensitive to chlorine and other common water pollutants. There are three main filtration systems: faucet, under the sink, and whole-home. Read on to find out which water filtration option is best.

Faucet Filters

faucetFaucet filters come in many different styles, but they all attach to the faucet to filter water at the point of use. Many of these filters allow homeowners to use regular tap water when they need to and flip the filter down to use the filtered water when needed. Other faucet filters don’t allow this option, making the homeowner take off the filter if they ever want to use regular, unfiltered tap water.

These filters are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. But before a homeowner decides on any particular type of filter, they should research some common contaminants in their local water. This can help them determine which filter is best. Of course, like any other filter, the actual filters in these models will need replacing on occasion. Luckily, most companies make this easy while keeping the replacements reasonably priced. Faucet filters are great for smaller families who want a quick and easy filtration solution.

Under-Sink Filters

filter Under-sink filters are exactly what they sound like. They sit under the sink and filter water just before it gets to the faucet. Since these filtration systems sit under the sink, they can be slightly larger than faucet filters, allowing them to have multiple filter stages to remove more contaminants than most faucet filters. However, under-sink filters are also generally harder to install and more expensive than simple faucet filters. Still, anyone with basic plumbing knowledge can generally install an under-sink filter system.

These filters don’t require power to operate, as they rely on the water pressure already inherent in a home’s plumbing system to transport water through the filters and to the faucet. Some under-sink filters only require filter changes once or twice a year, depending on capacity and usage.  Under-sink filtration systems are ideal for medium-sized families who just want clean water for drinking and cooking.

Whole-Home Filtration

Whole-home water filtration systems are quickly becoming a favorite for large families and those who want to limit their exposure to chemicals like chlorine. These systems filter water before it travels to any faucet in the house. This allows homeowners to rest easy knowing that when they brush their teeth, wash their hands, or take showers, they’re doing so in clean, healthy water.

These systems are more significant than the other two on this list and carry a higher up-front price. But, they also have a larger capacity and generally filter nearly all potentially harmful contaminants such as chlorine, lead, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals. Many of them eliminate foul odors and tastes from the water during filtration. Depending on the system, hiring a plumber to install a whole-home filter can eliminate the headaches of DIY installation.
